Snakes
May 27th, 2008According to the Bible, the snake was cursed to crawl on its belly and eat dust for the rest of its life and be the worst enemy of man.
From a human point of view it can be quite devastating to be condemned to a life crawling on one’s belly. While the snake may have grown used to crawling on its belly it still remains an object of hate for man. Whether or not the snake crawls on its belly as a result of a curse or the process of evolution, studies show that the ancestors of snakes had limbs which are now present in snakes as vestigial organs.
A snake is looked upon with a mixture of fear, dislike and detestation. The chief reason for this is that all snakes are considered poisonous, which is not the case. The term poisonous, is somewhat misleading, considering the fact that poison is either inhaled or ingested whereas venom is injected. So it would be more appropriate to classify them as venomous and non-venomous. The venom or poison is used by the snake to incapacitate and paralyze prey that it has caught. Most snakes are venomous though, and a snake-bite can cause pain and injury if not death.
In modern times however snakes are getting a better deal with animal rights activists and ecology conservation groups, fighting for their conservation and protection.
