Black Snakes
The United States is a paradise for both the snake as well as snake lovers. There are many snake experts who state that they find a great variety and diversity of snakes that are living in this country. About 45 species of snakes reside in the country of United States and only 6 among them seem to be venomous and these are usually found only in the gulf coast of Louisiana and North Carolina.
There are many people who actually don’t like these creatures just because they seem to be suffering from some snake phobia. And the rest just don’t like them because there are different myths and rumors that have been associated with these creatures. Like in the Christian religion the snake is often associate with the evil and is considered to be the main cause that had tempted both Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit, which god had warned. Similarly there are many others religions and sects that have different myths and notions about this creature.
But most of them don’t realize that these creatures do play a pivotal in the food cycle and its them who control the population of the rodents and frogs as well as the lizards. Imagine? What would have been our lives without them, there would be these stupid rats and rodents that would go on spreading those plague and other deadly diseases. They would be entering our houses and destroying our food grains as well as eating all our foodstuff and pulses.
And this is what exactly the black snake does! It’s a non venomous snake that eats those birds and small rodents and frog that could be a menace in our fields and houses. The black snake is also known as the common rat snake that usually feeds on rodents and other reptiles and insects. But the rat seems to be its favorite.
The common rat snake or what we call the black snake is a medium sized snake that measures about 40- 42 inches in length. The average diameter of the widest part of the snake measures about 1.5 or 2 inches, this is about 3 - 4 cms. The black snake is usually covered with scales and has great body that can constrict those rodents, lizards and other birds. These snakes are usually very shy and try to avoid any attack when confronted by humans.
